PR 101 for Startups– Determining What is Newsworthy

PR 101 for Startups- Determining What is Newsworthy – The Martin Group

Untitled design-736

Last month, Martin Davison Public Relations joined forces with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to host PR101, a free seminar for startups in LEARN at the Innovation Center.

PR101 was an overview of DIY media exposure for startups, companies that may not be able to afford a PR firm or a practitioner in-house. We briefed the attendees on area media outlets, pitching, planning press conferences, and using social media to reinforce PR. Most importantly, we addressed where PR begins:

What is newsworthy? For startups, here’s where to start:

  • Hiring of staff
  • Product advancements or new vendor partnerships
  • Rebranding
  • Pilots/beta launches
  • Major sales
  • Receipt of additional external funding, grants or rounds
  • Awards, recognitions, speaking engagements
  • Patents, status designations, tech breakthroughs
  • Other media coverage

With a number of clients within WNY’s startup ecosystem, we know the importance of being a resource for the region’s growing number of startups. Our team has also supported the startup community by being a DIG mechanic/mentor and assisting with Founder’s Institute, the Steve Case’s 2015 Rise of the Rest competition in Buffalo, Startup Grind Buffalo and Startup Weekend Buffalo.

And, use and share our Media Twitter List, a compilation of reporters’ Twitter handles in Buffalo, Rochester and Southern Ontario. Enjoy!
