Public Relations Director

Full-Time Position (Remote or Buffalo office)

Team: Public Relations
Reports To: Vice President, Public Relations
Supervises: Senior Manager, Public Relations
Full or Part Time: Full-Time Status
Location Preference: Buffalo, NY

 

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will oversee multiple client relationships, ensuring client success through strategic, personalized service and an understanding of their longterm business objectives, their industries and the market; while also proactively addressing potential challenges and opportunities and effectively managing crises as they arise. You will be responsible for the success of existing accounts, contributing to the development of new client opportunities, driving long-term strategies for clients, proactively developing and attracting top level talent for the PR department, and actively identifying and influencing the Agency’s growth.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages several client relationships, including some of the agency’s marquee clients, working comfortably with clients’ senior management and designated contacts
  • Helps clients achieve success through strategic, personalized service and an understanding of their long term business objectives, their industries, and their markets. Proactively addressing potential challenges and opportunities, effectively managing crises as they arise
  • Effectively develops and implements full-scale public relations campaigns from a strategic and tactical perspective
  • Manages client budgets and focuses on positive results and outcomes to deliver optimal returns on clients’ investments
  • Supervises and delegates assignments to agency staff and junior/mid-level staff members, as well as oversees related creative service project management needs, vendors and outside consultants as needed to carry out client requirements
  • Attends networking and media events, as well as meetings with clients, suppliers and partner organizations to discuss aspects of PR campaigns and activities
  • Drives both strategic and tactical execution for clients across media relations, community outreach and event activation
  • Serves as a day-to-day contact for highly complex or high-profile clients and provides direction to PR team on strategy and tactical media outreach
  • Utilizes crisis communication expertise to guide the client through certain sensitive communications situations, advising on PR, media, and social media strategies
  • Delivers presentations to various audiences, including in-person and online pitches
  • Budget development, negotiation and management
  • Establishes high-level community business relationships, as future business drivers for agency
  • Establishes and monitors staff performance and development goals for direct reports, assigns accountabilities, sets objectives, establishes priorities and conducts performance reviews
  • Procures new business leads, periodically leading/participating in new business presentations
  • Identifies internal and external talent, helps manages talent needs within the department and drives the staffing, interviewing, and hiring processes for direct reports
  • Coaches and develops team members to ensure effective internal and external relationships
  • Works with VP to set, execute on, and track goals for the department and especially our clients

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts customized media training sessions for clients
  • Utilizes agency assets to most efficiently deliver service value and excellence
  • Advances the agency’s thought leadership in healthcare communications and marketing

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of news and digital trends and tactics, with the ability to mobilize audience participation and engagement, and develop content and editorial pieces
  • Communicates effectively in person, via email, and via the telephone with both the client and the agency’s Public Relations team on specific projects
  • Ability to write content, copy and messaging in variety of styles, voices and tones, adaptable to different target audiences, product categories and branding initiatives
  • Ability to build relationships as a true counselor, providing Insight, guidance and confidence In the face of difficult or sensitive situations and crisis communications
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines, surpass client expectations, and demonstrate competence and discretion at all times.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to influence and motivate staff
  • Understanding of the healthcare industry, including hospital systems, health insurance, medical practices and other sectors within the industry
  • Proficient with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other Social Media sites
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, WordPress, Hootsuite, Dropbox, and other such tools
  • Collaborates effectively internally and cross departmentally to reach Agency objectives

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, journalism or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in the Public Relations field
  • Agency experience preferred
  • Healthcare industry experience desired
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, Buffalo, NY
