Wondering What We’re Reading This Summer?

July 28, 2017

Summer is the perfect time to lay out on a beach, on the patio or even on your bed with an interesting book. Our team is diversified and so too are our book choices this summer. Here’s what we’re reading.

Into the Water – Paula Hawkins
I love a good mystery that’s hard to put down.
– Kailey Kolozsvary, Public Relations Manager

The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
It was one that I missed out on reading in high school, and with the new show on Hulu out, I figured it would be a perfect time. I’m a total snob about reading the book before I watch any cinematic/small screen adaptation!
– Mary Bonomo, Assistant Art Director

The Power of Positive ThinkingNorman Vincent Peale
We all need a little self-help now and again.
– Fallon Martin, Intern

11/22/63 – Stephen King
I heard that it is a great story and I like how fiction has been written interspersed with non-fiction.
– Jim Lynch, Vice President | Media Director

Everydata – John H. Johnson. PhD and Mike Gluck
Great insights into the vast amount of data that we encounter on a daily basis with a common sense approach on how to interpret it. And I do virtually all of my reading digitally (Kindle app)….no hard copies for me!
– Jim Lynch, Vice President | Media Director

Away With Words: An Irreverent Tour Through the World of Pun Competitions – Joe Berkowitz
Berkowitz, a Fast Company editor and reporter, follows and participates in pun competitions throughout the U.S. for one year. This book is an easy, funny (punny) read and has changed the way I think, linguistically and in my PR writing.
– Kelsey Hanks, Public Relations Manager

The Black Hand: The Epic War Between a Brilliant Detective and the Deadliest Secret Society in America – Stephan Talty
True story of the first Italian-American detective in New York City history and his fight against the early Mafia. I’ve always joked that you can learn everything you need to know about life from The Godfather, but this is an inspiring story about a man with genuine courage and selflessness.
– Duane Bombard, Vice President | Creative Director

Start with Why – Simon Sinek
This is great for leadership inspiration.
– Emily Pumm, Multimedia Specialist

Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs – Henry Carroll
Offers some solid basic photography reinforcement.
– Emily Pumm, Multimedia Specialist

Paper Girls – Brain K. Vaughan
This is a comic book for artistic inspiration and fun!
– Emily Pumm, Multimedia Specialist

Circling the Sun – Paula McLain
It’s set in 1920s Kenya and the main character is extremely complex and a rebel for her own time. I’m enjoying it.
– Kelsey Shea, Senior Brand Manager

The Art of Raising a Puppy – The Monks of New Skete
We just got a puppy and the monks are experts on raising German Shepherds. It’s very philosophical.
– Kelsey Shea, Senior Brand Manager

Loving Frank – Nancy Horan
I’m inspired by the work being done at the Darwin Martin House and Graycliff Estate.
– Meg Hunter, Business Development Manager

Hot Dog Cold Dog – Frann Preston-Gannon
This book had my attention from start to end. If you like dogs, this book will not disappoint.
– Andrew Henesey, Art Director

A Little Dachshund’s Tale – April Jean
The story of Frances Peabody is something we can all relate to and learn from. Would read again. 10/10.
– Andrew Henesey, Art Director

The Hallo-Weiner – Dav Pilkey
Don’t let the title fool you, this is more than just a Halloween story. I laughed and I cried.
– Andrew Henesey, Art Director

If I Were a Panda – Wendell Minor
The passage on scratchy paws is particularly enlightening. But when I’m able to put that down, I’ve been digesting…
– John Jiloty, Vice President | Social Media and Content, Martin Davison PR | Martin Sport

Content Inc.: How Entrepreneurs Use Content to Build Massive Audiences – Joe Pulizzi

AND

Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us – Seth Godin
These are two of the most respected content marketers out there (and we all know Seth is a Buffalo guy!), so I highly recommend both for anyone looking to unlock the power of good content.
